Applied Measurement Professionals (AMP) has established several green initiatives to promote sustainable living and conserve our environment for generations to come. The AMP team is now helping promote “sustainability” through daily efforts to conserve energy, recycle materials and reduce consumption. This commitment starts with the Executive Office building for AMP and its parent company, the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). NBRC/AMP headquarters is located in an energy efficient building that uses all “Energy Star” rated appliances, energy efficient fluorescent lighting and non-CFC-based refrigerants in the HVAC system. Fire suppression systems are also HCFC and halon-free, contributing to ozone protection. The new 75,000 square foot NBRC/AMP Executive Office Building uses about the same amount of energy for heating, air conditioning, and lighting as NBRC/AMP’s previous location, which consisted of about half as much office space. From the facility management standpoint, the new office building is environmentally friendly, technologically advanced, architecturally stunning and provides a pleasant work environment. In addition to requiring less energy for lighting, window space has been maximized throughout the facility, to make efficient use of external light and provide outside views for AMP staff. The entire NBRC/AMP Executive Office Building and grounds are also a “smoke-free” campus. No smoking is permitted anywhere on the property, enabling staff and visitors to be free of “second hand smoke” and the environment to be free of related pollution and its hazards. AMP has adopted an extensive recycling program and reuses many boxes from incoming shipments for outgoing needs. The corporate recycling program involves most plastics, paper, magazines, newsletters, phone books and aluminum. Even AMP’s secure trash is recycled after shredding, a practice that the company has been carrying out for years. AMP is committed to reducing mailings by increasing electronic communication to clients and industry partners. AMP has also enrolled in a power curtailment program that helps conserve energy during periods of high demand. To promote energy conservation while in the office, AMP signed a five-year agreement to participate in the “MPower” program offered by Kansas City Power and Light (KCPL). This program allows us to save on cooling costs through curtailment of power usage during periods of high demand in the summer months. AMP provides environmental education and a green transportation rewards program for employees. To help reduce transportation energy consumption, AMP has recently implemented an “Alternative Transportation Program.” This program offers incentives for team members who drive vehicles that have been “SmartWay Certified” by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and/or who participate in a carpooling program approved by the company. In addition, AMP recognizes those who walk, ride a bicycle, or drive a motorcycle to work at least 30% of a quarter. AMP is dedicated to continuously finding ways to provide quality service while minimizing energy usage. President Gary A. Smith summarizes the importance of AMP’s green initiatives, “We are committed to taking actions that are good for business and the environment.”
